چکیده

ne of the main functions of the adult kidney is to maintain a constant extracellular fluid balance. he adult kidney does this, by and large, by filtering a massive quantity of fluid and reabsorbing the olutes needed to maintain volume and electrolyte homeostasis, while leaving the waste products to e excreted in the urine. One of the most precisely regulated functions of the adult kidney is to aintain sodium balance. The challenge of the neonatal kidney is even greater. It must maintain a ositive salt balance for growth while the neonate is fed a diet that is very low in sodium. This review ocuses on how the neonatal kidney reabsorbs NaCl with a special emphasis on the differences etween the neonatal and adult kidney. 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Breviscapine prevents downregulation of renal water and sodium transport proteins in response to unilateral ureteral obstruction

Objective(s):Our recent report indicates that breviscapine play a protective role of the kidney by down-regulating transforming growth factor-β1(TGF-β1), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and alleviating interstitial fibrosis following unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). In this study, we investigate the effect of breviscapine on changes of renal water and sodium transport proteins in response t...

Combination Therapy with Losartan and α-Tocopherol in Acute Ureteral Obstruction-Induced Renal Excretory Dysfunction and Acidification Defect

Background: Previous study by the authors showed that a-tocopherol prevents oxidative stress but would not improve depressed excretory variables in post-obstructed kidney (POK) after release of 24-h unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). This study is a supplementary investigation on the effects of a-tocopherol combined with an antagonist of angiotensin-II type-1 (AT1) receptor on renal dysfunc...

Renal sodium transport and oxygen consumption1

&IL, FREDKIK, KNUT AUKLAND, AND HARALD E. REFSUM. Renal sodium transfwrt and oxygen consumption. Am. J. Physiol. 201(3): 511-516. I g6 I .-Glomerular filtration rate and renal blood flow were increased in dogs by infusion of 270 glycine and hypertonic NaCl at rates of 8 ml/min. This procedure resulted both in an increased rate of sodium reabsorption and in increased oxygen consumption. Approxim...

Sodium and calcium transport pathways along the mammalian distal nephron: from rabbit to human.

The final adjustment of renal sodium and calcium excretion is achieved by the distal nephron, in which transepithelial ion transport is under control of various hormones, tubular fluid composition, and flow rate. Acquired or inherited diseases leading to deranged renal sodium and calcium balance have been linked to dysfunction of the distal nephron. Diuretic drugs elicit their effects on sodium...

Impaired renal conservation of sodium and chloride during sustained correction of systemic acidosis in patients with type 1, classic renal tubular acidosis.

In 10 patients with classic renal tubular acidosis in whom correction of acidosis was sustained with orally administered potassium bicarbonate, renal conservation of sodium was evaluated when dietary intake of sodium was restricted to 9--13 meq/day. In five patients, renal conservation of sodium was impaired by at least one criterion of impairment. In the remaining patients, renal conservation ...
